Each month USCIS announces whether adjustment of status applications in the U.S. use the final action dates or the dates for filing chart. Visa applicants abroad use final action dates.

The Visa Bulletin applies to family-sponsored and employment-based green cards that have annual limits. If your date is current, your case can move to the next step: filing for adjustment of status in the U.S. or completing your immigrant visa at a U.S. consulate. If it isn't current yet, an attorney can explain what to prepare in the meantime and whether another category could be faster.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Visa Bulletin?

The Visa Bulletin is a monthly publication of the U.S. Department of State. It shows which green card applicants in categories with annual limits can move forward, based on their priority date, their category and their country of chargeability.

What is a priority date?

Your priority date is usually the date your petition (for example Form I-130 or I-140) or labor certification was filed. It is printed on your receipt or approval notice and marks your place in line.

What is the difference between final action dates and dates for filing?

Final action dates show when a green card can actually be approved. Dates for filing show when you may submit your application and documents. Each month USCIS announces which chart applies to adjustment of status applications filed in the United States.

Which country applies to Polish citizens?

Poland is not listed separately in the Visa Bulletin, so Polish applicants use the "All Chargeability Areas Except Those Listed" column, shown here as "All other countries".

Do spouses and parents of U.S. citizens need to check the Visa Bulletin?

No. Spouses, unmarried children under 21 and parents of adult U.S. citizens are immediate relatives, a category with no annual limit, so they don't wait for a priority date to become current.
