Short answer

Poland offers two main long-term statuses. The permanent residence permit (zezwolenie na pobyt stały) is available, for example, to people of Polish origin, holders of the Karta Polaka and qualifying spouses of Polish citizens. The EU long-term resident permit is generally available after five years of continuous legal residence with stable income, health insurance and Polish at B1 level. Both are filed through the MOS system.

Who this is for

  • People of Polish origin and Karta Polaka holders
  • Spouses of Polish citizens
  • Foreigners with five or more years of legal residence in Poland

  • Follow-up and appeals

We handle letters from the office and, if needed, the appeal.

Two routes to stay for good

Permanent residence (zezwolenie na pobyt stały) is for foreigners with a specific connection to Poland. Common routes include Polish origin, holding a Karta Polaka with the intention of settling in Poland, and being married to a Polish citizen for at least three years after living in Poland on a residence permit based on that marriage for at least two years.

The EU long-term resident permit (zezwolenie na pobyt rezydenta długoterminowego UE) rewards time spent in Poland. It generally requires at least five years of continuous legal residence, a stable and regular income, health insurance and Polish language skills at B1 level.

Counting your years correctly

Not every period of stay counts equally toward the five years, and long absences from Poland can break continuity. Before filing, we reconstruct your residence history from your permits and travel to make sure the application is filed at the right time.

Filing and the card

Both applications are filed electronically through MOS. Once granted, the status is indefinite, and you receive a residence card valid for ten years. If you're unsure whether to apply for residence or citizenship, see Polish citizenship.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between permanent residence and EU long-term residence?

Both allow you to live in Poland indefinitely. Permanent residence is based on a specific connection to Poland, such as Polish origin or marriage to a Polish citizen. EU long-term residence is based on years of legal residence and gives some additional mobility within the EU.

Do I need to speak Polish?

For the EU long-term resident permit, yes: you need to document Polish at B1 level, for example with a state certificate. Requirements for permanent residence depend on the route.

How long is the residence card valid?

The permit itself is indefinite. The residence card that proves it is issued for ten years and then replaced.

Can I qualify through my Polish grandparents?

Possibly. People of Polish origin and Karta Polaka holders may qualify for permanent residence. You may also already be a Polish citizen by descent, which is worth checking first.
